Urban Outfitters Brands Profit From Suffering of Cows, Sheep, Goats, Geese, Alpacas

Behind every wool, leather, cashmere, mohair, alpaca wool, or down item are animals.

Geese who scream as feathers are ripped out of their bodies to line a coat or stuff a pillow:

down feathers , live-plucked goose

Sheep who struggle as workers violently kick, throw, and punch them:

Cows whose faces are burned and branded while a knee is driven into their necks:

Pregnant alpacas who are strapped to a table, are stretched on a restraining device, and vomit in fear and pain:

Goats who scream in pain and fear as workers tear out their hair with sharp metal combs. “Spent” goats—no longer profitable to the cashmere industry—are struck in the head with a hammer.

Urban Outfitters, Inc.—the parent company of Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Free People—profits from these animals’ misery and ignores the bloody violence of their final moments. These animals are abused and killed for items that no one needs, and the cruelty won’t end until we make these industries unprofitable. The suffering won’t stop until everyone knows never to buy a sweater, coat, or anything else made of materials stolen from animals.

Together, we must hold these brands accountable. If they think young people will sit quietly and fund horrific animal abuse while the planet goes up in flames largely because of animal agriculture, they have another thing coming. Let’s do everything we can to let Urban Outfitters know that we are rejecting businesses that profit off of cruelty and that its animal-derived clothing must go.

Here’s how to take action RIGHT NOW:

  • Check the tags on everything you buy—never buy clothing or accessories made of wool, leather, down, mohair, cashmere, silk, alpaca wool, or any other animal-derived material.
  • Take action on our action alert urging Urban Outfitters to ban all sales of animal-derived materials across all its brands.
  • Download videos and images from this Dropbox folder, and share these animals’ stories online with your friends, fellow hub members, and everyone else you know.
  • Flood the brands’ Instagram posts with comments—@urbanoutfitters, @freepeople,
  • @anthropologie—and make it known that they should be ashamed each time they promote items that animals suffer and die for.

Take This to the Streets

People shopping at Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Free People need to know the truth about the cruelty that these brands support. E-mail your adviser to get a custom protest kit—you can choose from geometric animal masks, signs, and more.

If you see a line forming outside Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, or Free People, talk to the shoppers and let them know that these brands still sell clothing made using mutilated and beaten sheep, alpacas, goats, and birds as well as violently killed cows and silkworms. Encourage them to leave the line and shop elsewhere for ethical vegan clothing. Get with your advisor to order leaflets to hand out.

If you haven’t signed up to become an SOS hub member or organizer yet, do that now and join a network of other young activists rising up to demand an end to human supremacy.

Together, we can change the fashion industry, because clothing shouldn’t be made from fear.
