The SOS Summer of Activism

It’s finally summer! But while many of us are lounging by the pool or enjoying some delicious vegan ice cream, animals are still being tormented in laboratories, horrifically killed in slaughterhouses, and beaten and abused for human entertainment. They don’t get a summer break, and it’s important to continue standing up against speciesism. SOS has you covered with these summer activism tips to help you keep the pressure on animal abusers:

Chalk the Sidewalk

You don’t need a large group of people or lots of props in order to have an impact. Simply getting outside and chalking animal rights messages on the sidewalk can help spread awareness.

Pro tip: Chalk in a high-traffic area to get the most eyes on your message.

Leave Literature Everywhere

Leave literature and stickers anywhere and everywhere to help spread the message that animals are not ours to use. Take some leaflets to your dentist’s office or your local coffee shop, or leave leaflets and animal rights books you’ve already read in little libraries around your neighborhood.

Host a Vegan Picnic

There’s no better way to show others how easy it is to save nearly 200 animals every year than by sharing delicious vegan food. Invite your friends and family to a vegan picnic, bake together, or grill some mouthwatering vegan burgers. Everyone will learn that they can enjoy great flavors while being kind to animals and protecting the environment and their own health.

Never Visit Roadside Zoos or Marine Parks

Animals at roadside zoos and marine parks are forced to spend their lives in cramped, barren cages or tanks just to entertain the public. They’re deprived of everything that’s natural and important to them, just so humans can profit. This is speciesist. Please, never buy a ticket to a place that exploits animals—and encourage your friends and family to avoid such places, too.

Make Your Own Animal Rescue Kit

While you’re out and about this summer, keep your eyes peeled for animals in need. When you least expect it, a stray dog might run in front of your car or an injured, homeless cat could wander into your yard. Get prepared in advance of an animal emergency and save valuable time by assembling your own animal rescue kit. Check out what to include here.

Speak Out Against Using Animals at Fairs and Festivals

At festivals, fairs, carnivals, and other events, animals used for entertainment are denied everything that’s natural and important to them. Often torn away from their families, they’re forced to give rides, subjected to stressful photo ops with humans, and sometimes even given away as prizes. You can help animals exploited at fairs and festivals by signing PETA’s action alert here.

In college and want to get paid to help animals next semester? Get a head start on your back-to-school planning and apply today to be an SOS campus rep. If you’re eligible and accepted, you can get paid $60 for each approved event you host on your school’s campus. We’ll provide all the materials you’ll need for free, and you’ll be paired with an SOS staff member who will help guide your events, advise you on hub management, and help you develop strategies for your campaigns to advance the cause of animal liberation.
